PAPIER VAMPIER // PAPER VAMPIREĪs The South African notes, there are several Afrikaans words that simply sound funny when they’re translated directly into English. Smorgasbord, which has been adopted into English, starts to make a little more sense when it's interpreted as a sandwich table, or more generally, a buffet offering various dishes. ( Smör also means butter, making smörgås mean either "butter goose" or "butter butter.") Smörgås is taken to mean “bread and butter,” and thus a sandwich. The word gås literally translates to goose, but the Online Etymology Dictionary notes that it also carries a second meaning: a clump (of butter). While this may sound slightly off-putting to English speakers, many Germanic languages use the same word for “warts” and “nipples,” according to The Economist. Why invent a new word when toes are basically the fingers of the feet? At least that seems to be the logic behind the conjoining of these two words in Portuguese, French, Arabic, and a number of other languages. It’s also sometimes called amuse-gueule, meaning the same thing. This one doesn’t translate perfectly into English because the French truly have a monopoly on food terminology, but an amuse-bouche is basically a bite-sized hors d’oeuvre (appetizer, but literally “outside of work”). There's some crossover between Mandarin and Cantonese, two of the main languages spoken in China, but this term is solely used among Cantonese speakers, particularly in Hong Kong. It allegedly stems from greedy priests who, upon receiving the dish from locals, scarfed it down so quickly that they choked, according to BBC Good Food. The legend of how this noodle got its name is just as twisted as the pasta itself. A shark is a “fat fish,” a skunk is a “stink fox,” and a baboon is a “monkey head dog,” which sounds like a terrifying mythical creature you wouldn’t want to cross paths with. Many of the Vietnamese words for animals sound as if a group of comedians went to a zoo and started roasting every creature they saw. In this spirit, we’ve selected 25 of our favorite foreign words and their weird and wonderful literal translations. On the other hand, when done correctly, word-for-word translations-also known as literal or direct translations-can help language learners understand a word’s origin while also providing interesting insight into how different cultures perceive ordinary objects. (See: The Iraqi hotel whose buffet sign misidentified meatballs as “ Paul is dead.”) It's easy to tell when text has been fed through an online translator because certain words and phrases tend to get jumbled up in the process, as evidenced by the many mistranslations posted online every day. Anyone who has ever studied a foreign language knows that translator apps, while helpful, aren’t always reliable.

We will start by explaining each of the four main welding processes. Trying to make the right decision without some prior knowledge could result in an expensive mistake. Welding equipment tends to be quite focused, so even the best welder for beginners isn’t capable of doing everything. However, while getting started isn’t difficult, there are several different processes to consider. Skilled welders are always in demand, and earnings can be considerable. It can be a fascinating hobby or a full-time career. Aluminum welding proved hazardous and didn't make specialized aluminum flux core welding wire.Welding can be used to fix auto bodywork, repair a gate, make an Art Deco chair, or create a garden sculpture. Scientific experiments worked, but they ended at that. Can You Weld Aluminum With a Flux Core?įlux-core aluminum welding is not possible. FCAW has welds with similar strength to stick welding except in aluminum and dirty or painted material. It's an efficient way of welding professionally and expertly to produce cleaner materials. But stick welding works best for welding dirty metals, while Flux Core is less effective on tainted metal welds but will work well with the ones with a stainless steel body. Flux core is more effective for large welding jobs, while Stick is better for thicker welds. What's Better, Stick Welder or Flux Core?īoth are good in their way. The thicker diameter wire withstands windy conditions better. It's better to offer more welding power, deeper penetration, and higher heat. However, some welders can run on inverters provided it produces the current needed.įAQs Which Is Better, 0.030 or 0.035 Flux Core Wire?Ī flux core wire with a diameter of 0.035 inches is better. However, for thicker welds like pipe fencing, trailer flames, and heavy machine repairs, you'll need more input, like a 220 welder.Īlso, a dual-voltage machine running on either 120V or 240 volts can generate that input. So if you have thin metal sheet projects like hinges, a 120-v welder will do. What Input Will I use?Ī welder with 120 volts inputs can give up to 140 amperes maximum, delivering only 1/4-inch welds. This means that you can use them to weld for 6 of every 10 minutes. Some FCAW welders used for this process have duty cycles of 60 percent at full power output. Most flux-cored arc welders have a duty cycle of 100%, which indicates they can be used to weld continuously at lower power output. What Is the Duty Cycle for the Flux Core Welder? If you want to run FCAW, most MIG machines will do that just fine because MIG welders are also Flux core welders. That is important because most flux core welders have MIG in their model name, but they need to do a better MIG. But not all flux core welders can run MIG.

Hermann Gottlieb try to disable the drones, but the latter discovers that the former is behind the attack when he commands the Kaiju-Jaeger hybrids to open multiple breaches across the Pacific Rim. The Kaiju-Jaeger hybrids simultaneously attack all Shatterdomes, inflicting heavy casualties and incapacitating almost all Jaegers. When the drones reach their respective locations, their piloting operations are hijacked by cloned Kaiju brains secretly mounted onboard. Upon removing its reactor, they find that Obsidian Fury was controlled not by humans, but by a Kaiju's secondary brain, which testing shows was grown on Earth. Although Obsidian Fury initially has the upper hand, Gipsy Avenger is able to overpower the Jaeger. Jake and Nate travel there in Gipsy Avenger, but Obsidian Fury destroys the complex and engages them in battle. Moments before her death, Mako had transmitted the location of a defunct Jaeger production facility in Siberia. Obsidian Fury escapes into the ocean before backup Jaegers can apprehend it. Her death prompts the PPDC council to authorize and deploy the drones immediately. Mako is due to deliver a final assessment to determine the approval of the drones at a PPDC council meeting in Sydney, but is accidentally killed by a rogue Jaeger, Obsidian Fury, during an altercation with the latter and Gipsy Avenger, Jake and Nate's Jaeger, before she can. Nate and Mako explain that the Jaeger program is threatened by the Shao Corporation's new drone program, which offers to mass-produce Jaeger drones developed by Liwen Shao and Dr. Jake's adoptive sister and Japanese Senator Mako Mori persuades him to return to PPDC as an instructor to avoid prison, with Amara as his recruit.Īrriving at the China Shatterdome, Jake starts training Jaeger cadets with his estranged former co-pilot Nathan "Nate" Lambert. It was followed in 2021 by a 14-episode animated series on Netflix. It also received mixed reviews many critics considered it inferior to del Toro's film and criticized its story, while praising its visual effects, action sequences, and performances of Boyega, Eastwood and Spaeny. With a gross of $290 million worldwide, the film was a box office disappointment. The film's world premiere was held at Vue West End in London on March 15, 2018, and was released in the United States on March 23, 2018, by Universal Pictures (unlike its predecessor, which was released by Warner Bros. Principal photography began in November 2016 in Australia. The story follows Jake Pentecost, who is given one last chance to live up to his father's legacy after Kaiju, giant sea monsters, are unleashed back into the world and aim to destroy it. The film takes place in 2035, ten years after the events of the original film. The sequel stars John Boyega, as well as Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Adria Arjona and Zhang Jin, with Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman returning from the original film. Guillermo del Toro, director of the first movie, serves as a producer while production studios Legendary Pictures and Double Dare You Productions developed the movie. Despite being billed as a remaster, it does actually feel like Raven has built upon the source material substantially and delivered a significantly upgraded version that stays true to the familiar, while simultaneously taking full advantage of the available bump in horsepower. Infinity Ward itself has been tied up with the development of Infinite Warfare for the past three years, so it's been left to industry veteran Raven Software to ensure that this edition remains as faithful to the original as possible. Nowadays, the series still retains the big set pieces, but its ability to shock seems to be a thing of the long distant past. they were playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, weren't they). Indeed, the chapter entitled 'Shock and Awe' featured an event so monolithically jaw dropping that those who bore witness to it can even now still recall exactly what it was they were doing at the time it happened (well. Storming a TV station in an unnamed war torn Middle Eastern city, manning the controls of an AC-130 gunship during a daring rescue mission and a flashback to a high-profile assassination attempt in Pripyat while wearing a stealth enabling Ghillie suit are all standout highlights from a campaign that never really lets up. For many gamers, this was their first encounter with the franchise, so the opportunity to replay its many memorable chapters feels a bit like getting reacquainted with a long-lost buddy. Nostalgia is a powerful sentiment that is often in danger of being abused whenever any game deemed a 'classic' gets thrown back into the public domain for a second shot, so it's quite refreshing to find that Modern Warfare still holds up very well to scrutiny. The campaign itself follows both the US Marines (in the Middle East) and the SAS (operating covertly in Russia) as they follow up intel on an extremist called Khaled Al-Asad who has managed to obtain a Russian nuclear device that he's planning to detonate. It was revolutionary when it released and even subsequent iterations of COD have replicated this formula and failed to have the same kind of impact with it. For the benefit of the few that may have missed it the first time around, it features a multi-threaded narrative that flits between a variety of worldwide locales as events unfold for multiple protagonists on an overlapping timeline. It's fair to say that Modern Warfare's arrival to the market single-handedly evolved the first-person shooter genre overnight and introduced many fresh innovations that have since become de rigueur in video games. Thankfully, their prayers have been answered in the shape of Modern Warfare Remastered. Nine years later and COD is all about futuristic weaponry, wall running, power slides, boost jumping and space travel, which wouldn't be so bad in itself if the diehard fans weren't all yearning for a return to the old-school 'boots on the ground' action the series built its foundations on. While it's been well documented that publisher Activision itself was opposed to this bold change of direction, it was a gamble that definitely paid off, as its frank, brutal take on conflict resonated with a game-buying public seemingly in search of something new. This was the year, however, the studio had instead opted to cover global terrorism in the modern era with a campaign that possessed a sense of gritty realism hitherto unseen in first-person shooters. Up until this point, developer Infinity Ward had enjoyed moderate success with a series that had become predominantly known for its World War II setting. Arguably, 2007 was the year that Call of Duty finally exploded (pun intended) with the release of Modern Warfare. (This concludes my pork crackling maths lesson … □) While fresh pork belly = nice and dry, flat skin = amazing crackling. Butcher meat is not only typically better quality, but as mentioned, vacuum-packed meat = skin soaking in wet juices + wrinkled skin = inferior crackling. And believe me, inexperienced butchers make that mistake all the time! More on my anti-skin-scoring philosophy below!Īvoiding vac-packed belly is better – Freshly cut pork belly from the butcher is better than supermarket pork belly that’s been sitting in a vacuum pack for who-knows-how-long. Why? Well if you make even a small mistake with scoring you can compromise the crackling due to meat juices rising up and flooding the skin. There’s NO need to score the skin for perfect crackling! Not only is it unnecessary, it’s downright dangerous to the end result. NO SCORING! That’s right, I’m busting one of the top myths out there about developing great crackling. This is important for consistent crackling, and especially true where there are wrinkles – crackling never goes crispy inside the wrinkles But unlike the thickness, it is not as important for even cooking and great crackling įlat skin – Seek out a piece of pork belly with dry, flat, and smooth skin as opposed wrinkled and wet like you can get with vac-packed belly. If it’s too thin, the flesh will cook faster and may become too tender before the required cook time needed to soften the skin in preparation for becoming ultra-crispy crackling Įven shape – A nice even rectangle or square shape presents nicer. Pork belly – Here’s what to look for to find the perfect piece of pork belly!Įven thickness – Look for a piece that is even in thickness as possible and at least 3.25 cm / 1.3″ thick, with nice layers of fat between the flesh. Yes, really, this is ALL you need! Pork belly is such a flavourful and rich cut, that all we need is simple seasoning and some slow-roasting magic – you don’t need anything more! Here’s what you need to make slow-roasted pork belly. You are 5 simple steps away from THIS!!! ↓↓↓ What you need to make the best Roasted Pork Belly of your life My method is so insanely simple, yet yields such exceptional results, that it’s almost unbelievable. Meanwhile, beneath our perfect crackling is ridiculously tender meat interspersed with layers of nicely rendered fat that’s soft and giving, so that each mouthful is a juicy, porky joy. Not that rock-hard, smooth-surfaced crackling you sometimes encounter that feels like is going to dislodge a tooth! Sure it’s crispy but it’s hard – and that stuff is just not pleasant to eat. What’s more, the crackling will have the perfect texture that we are looking for: Bubbly, puffy and crispy skin that shatters into a thousand porky shards in your mouth when you bite into it. The result: The crackling will be ultra-crispy from edge to edge. Otherwise, the highest point burns before the lowest part has a chance to crisp up to crackling! See below for my usual full instructions along with process photos! The secret it perfect crackling is to level the skin so there’s even heat distribution. (Game-changing tip #2) andīlast it finally at 240☌/465☏ for 30 minutes to make the skin bubble and form the crackling! This makes the crackling cook evenly = perfect crackling. as horizontal as possible) by propping up the belly with balls of foil beneath. Roast in a slow oven for 2 1/2 hours at 140☌/285☏ so the flesh becomes tender Oil and season both the flesh and the skin, then wrap the flesh sides with foil, leaving skin exposed. Here is how to make the best pork belly of your life, in 5 simple steps (read further below for the why):ĭry the skin, preferably leaving it uncovered overnight in the fridge How to make Slow-Roasted Crispy Pork Belly: Overview Slices neatly (pictured here with vermouth jus) ….Finally we hit the pork with maximum heat to develop the amazing crackling! We achieve this by firstly cooking slowly at a low temperature, while using a trick with foil to get a confit effect that keeps the flesh parts bathed in fat as it cooks. I specifically want it to be sliceable (what is a roast, if it can’t be carved?) so it presents nicely, but is beautifully tender when you start eating it. So, we can all agree on what defines awesome crackling, but what about the meat? For me, it’s about cooking it to that perfect point where the fat is oh-so-soft, the meat is extremely tender, but not so tender that it falls apart “at a touch” like pulled pork. And I assure you, the simple steps in this recipe are designed around delivering that end goal reliably, every single time! When we’re talking about roasted pork belly, I feel like the pursuit of bubbly, perfectly crispy pork crackling goes without saying. Now that you’ve scrolled past the photos above, is it fair to say I have your attention? □ This is because both consoles are capable of rendering these titles at above 30fps, but because the game has been locked to that number of frames, the Xbox One S can’t show its true colours. In other titles where the framerate is locked to 30fps, there’s much less difference. This means a GPU with more grunt will always have the advantage. The reason for this is because Project CARS has an unlocked framerate, which means the Xbox is allowed free reign over how fast it can go. The extreme results came from the tricky Project CARS, with Digital Foundry finding in rainy conditions at the Monaco circuit with a load of cars in view, the Xbox One S was faster. This is rare, though: most of their findings show the Xbox One S having a sub-3fps advantage over the Xbox One. Digital Foundry conducted some scientifically rigorous testing on both consoles and found, at the absolute most, the Xbox One S could be 9fps faster than than Xbox One. In real terms, not much, at least right now. However, the company has been extremely careful not to market this as a reason to buy the One S fearing original Xbox One owners might be a trifle annoyed. Instead of just overclocking the GPU when it was actually needed, Microsoft chose to leave it running at its elevated clock speed all the time. As a result, the Xbox One S has to transcode the HDR footage into non-HDR footage, which is a moderately difficult computing task. GameDVR and screenshots aren’t HDR-compatible, so any footage you capture will be in plain-ol’ HD. Instead, is the Xbox’s GameDVR video capture service and screenshot tool that need it. However, HDR is not the direct culprit of this clock speed boost. The One S is capable of displaying games in HDR, meaning punchier, brighter colours and, consequently, higher contrast. In short, Microsoft had to slightly overclock the Xbox One S’s GPU to make the console’s new features work properly with pre-existing features. It’s an interesting question with a complicated answer. The Xbox One S will likely consume less power than the Xbox One thanks to this development. The move means it can squeeze more performance out of the chip without increasing power consumption and heat. This is because the company has switched from a 28-nanometre chip manufacturing process to a 14nm one. Microsoft has been able to stuff the One S’s components into a smaller chassis with quieter cooling and a smaller power supply, despite increasing the power of the chip. Similarly, the tiny amount of ESRAM (32MB of memory physically right next to the GPU) has seen a bandwidth increase up from 204GB/s to 219GB/s. The Xbox One S’s GPU (graphics processing unit) is clocked at 914MHz, which is a minor increase over the 853MHz in the original Xbox One. Should existing Xbox One owners be annoyed and does this performance increase warrant an upgrade? What has Microsoft done? Here I’m going to explain the ins and outs of the Xbox One S and how significant the difference really is. You can read their full breakdown and video on Eurogamer. Computing Editor Michael Passingham takes a look at why this is the case and what real-world effects it’ll actually have on your gaming.įirst of all, a huge shout out has to go to Digital Foundry who put in some long hours to run the numbers and understand what exactly Microsoft has done with its new slimline console. It’s official, the new Xbox One S is faster than the original Xbox One. If there are no other rails adjacent, or if placed beside an existing stretch of track of any type, then in Bedrock Edition the new rail orients itself as a straight north-south track, and in Java Edition the new rail orients itself in the direction the player is facing.More information regarding placement on transparent blocks can be found at Opacity/Placement.Ī placed rail configures itself to be straight or curved according to rail blocks around it. For example, if a fence is on the ground, attempting to attach a rail to the side of the fence causes the rail to be attached to the top of the ground next to the fence instead. Rails are about 0.1 blocks high and fence gates cannot be placed directly on top of rails, despite the objects not visibly obstructing each other.Ī rail cannot be attached to the side or bottom of any block, but attempting to make such an attachment may cause the rail to attach to the top of a block under the destination space. any of the above underwater (making the rail waterlogged).the top of an upside-down slab, upside-down stairs, or trapdoor.the top of any full block (stone, dirt, blocks of gold, glass, etc.), including full-block mechanism components ( command blocks, dispensers, droppers, note blocks, and redstone lamps). To place a rail, use a rail item while pointing at a surface facing the space the rail should occupy. A sequence of rails (including regular rails, activator rails, detector rails, and powered rails) is called a track. A rail can be used as a minecart track and as a redstone component. |
